A little later, workers on the docks of Porto Venero found a huge cache of treasures that had just remained stashed in the seabed. The treasure included remains of old structures, statues, and other items, all with imperial insignias. The items were recovered from the water.


During the 1940s, more evidence came to light. First, a pilot named Raimondo Baucher was taking aerial pictures of the area, which showed huge ruins under the surface. However, researchers did not seriously investigate the site itself until the 1960s.
